The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a travel advisory cautioning Indian citizens against travelling to Bangladesh in light of the politically charged climate owing to student protests in the region. On July 25th, the MEA had provided an update with regard to 6700 Indian students in Bangladesh having returned to the country. “In view of ongoing developments, Indian nationals are strongly advised against travelling to Bangladesh till further notice. All Indian nationals presently in Bangladesh are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements and remain in contact with the High Commission of India in Dhaka through their emergency phone numbers: +8801958383679, +8801958383680, +8801937400591,” MEA’s advisory mentioned.
The protests in Bangladesh emerged after a quota for families involved in the freedom struggle was announced. More than 200 people are believed to have lost their lives ever since the protests started. This includes both policemen and students. The Anti-Discrimination Student’s movement launched a non-cooperation movement against the government. Their demands include the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. “Those who are protesting on the streets right now are not students, but terrorists who are out to destabilise the nation,” Sheikh Hasina had earlier remarked.
