Pakistan recently stepped up to the Number 1 rank in ODIs

Sri Lanka have managed to maintain the longest unbeaten streak in their ODI history

2012 T20 World Cup semifinals between the 2 teams took place in the same venue

The clash between Sri Lanka and Pakistan scheduled on September 14th in the Premadasa Colombo stadium can be treated as a semi final for all practical purposes as India have sealed a spot in the finals and Bangladesh have been eliminated from the Asia Cup. Pakistan recently gained the number 1 ranking for a brief duration and would be basking in confidence. Sri Lanka too have had their longest ever winning streak in One-Day International history and would be up for the challenge. Here are some moments in the past where the 2 teams squared off under similar circumstances

2012 T20 World Cup Semi- Finals: This contest was also held in the Premadasa Colombo stadium. Sri Lanka opted to bat. They did not lose wickets quickly but the run rate never picked up. Captain Mahela Jayawardane was the top scorer with a 36-ball 42. Pakistan had to chase 140. They had a steady start but Matthhews and Hearth applied constant pressure on the middle overs by taking wickets regularly. Pakistan needed 50 from 6 overs which is considered achievable in T20 standard but Hearth picked up 2 wickets in the next 2 balls exposing the tail. Sri Lanka secured a 16 run win.

Benson and Hedges World Cup 1992 Group stages: Although Sri Lanka had been eliminated by the time the 2 teams faced off, Pakistan was amidst a gigantic uphill task of having to win 3 in 3 games to be in contention for a semi final berth. Srilanka set a target of 213 after opting to bat. Pakistan were in a spot of bother at 84 for 3. But a 100-run partnership between Saleem Malik and Javed Miandad in which both got 50s kept them in the game. 3 quick wickets fell thereafter but Ijaiz Ahmed and Wasim Akram held onto their nerves to hand Pakistan a last over victory.

The 2 teams had also clashed under similar circumstances in the 1995 Asia Cup when Sri Lanka had the upper hand and the finals of the 2009 T20 World Cup when Pakistan had the upper hand.
