  • Woman fined Rs 500 for eating on Bengaluru’s Namma Metro, sparking online debate
  • Supporters called the penalty harsh and privacy-violating; others backed
  • BMRCL’s rules The incident raised questions about empathy, health needs, and policy consistency

A Bengaluru woman commuter was fined Rs 500 by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) after she was caught eating on a Namma Metro train. The incident, which took place on April 26, came to light after another commuter recorded her eating and shared the video online. She was later intercepted and fined at Madavara Metro Station on April 28 for violating the Metro’s no-food policy. BMRCL reiterated that eating and drinking are strictly prohibited on metro premises, as per official guidelines.

However, the incident sparked strong reactions online. Many users defended the woman, pointing out that she was eating quietly without causing a mess. They argued that the video’s publication violated her privacy and showed a lack of empathy. Several people cited reasons such as health conditions and long working hours as valid justifications for eating during commutes. Critics of the fine also questioned the presence of food stalls in metro stations if eating is not permitted, calling the policy inconsistent.

On the flip side, some social media users supported the authorities, saying that rules are meant to be followed regardless of circumstances. The incident has since become a polarizing topic, highlighting the ongoing debate between public cleanliness and individual needs.
