He criticized Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) decision to recall players from IPL

Vaughan believes this move does not better prepare players for T20 World Cup

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan has voiced his criticism of the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) decision to recall players from the Indian Premier League (IPL) ahead of the playoffs to participate in a series against Pakistan. Vaughan believes this move does not better prepare the players for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Jos Buttler, alongside Phil Salt and Will Jacks, left their IPL franchises to join the England squad for the Pakistan series, a decision that Vaughan argues is counterproductive. Speaking on the Club Prairie podcast, Vaughan reportedly emphasized the importance of the pressure-filled environment of the IPL playoffs, suggesting it provides invaluable experience. “This tournament is massive for players, exposed to pressure from fans, owners, and social media. I felt particularly for Jacks and Salt, but even Buttler could have benefited from staying,” he said.

Despite Vaughan’s critique, England dominated the first T20I against Pakistan, securing a 23-run victory with Buttler named Player of the Match for his impressive 84 runs. However, Jacks and Salt did not contribute significantly with the bat.

Vaughan concluded by reiterating his stance that playing in the IPL would have been more beneficial for the players’ preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup. “Will Jacks and Phil Salt would have been better prepared staying in the IPL than heading back to play against Pakistan,” he asserted.
