Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty has been named the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest honour in cinema. The announcement was made by Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on September 30, recognizing Mithun’s immense contribution to Indian cinema.

Mithun, 74, expressed deep emotions upon receiving the news, stating he was overwhelmed by the honor. “I have no words to express how I feel. I come from the bylanes of Kolkata; I never imagined a boy from the footpaths could win such an honor,” the actor shared. He dedicated the award to his family and fans, who have supported him throughout his illustrious career.
Mithun rose to prominence with his debut in Mrinal Sen’s Mrigayaa (1976), for which he won a National Award. Over the next four decades, he became a beloved figure in Indian cinema, known for his versatility. His performances between 1980 and 1990 cemented his status as a leading star, and he gained the moniker “Disco Dancer” for his distinctive dance style in the iconic film of the same name.
