Despite most exit polls ruling against their favour, the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) is all set to form the government in Mizoram. They currently have 22 seats and are leading in 5 other leads. This is a stark improvement from 2018 wherein they had managed to get hold of merely 8 seats.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has managed to win 2 seats in the election. This is a marginal improvement from the one seat they had won in the buddhist dominated region of the state in the previous election. The trend of decline for the Indian National Congress continued in Mizoram. They currently have just one lead. In the previous election, they had managed to win 5 seats. They were in power in the state between 2008 and 2018. ZPM has never managed to coonsolidate complete majority in its favour since its inception in 1997.
The results for the 2023 election were supposed to be announced on December 3rd along the other states namely Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. However it was postponed after several requests from various organisations in the state as Sundays are reserved for church service.
ZPM had won all the 11 seats in the local municipality election held in Lunglei in March earlier this year. Lack of development and failure of the Mizo National Front (MNF) to keep its promises were the agendas with which the election was fought. Party President Shri Lalduhoma is the likely Chief Ministerial candidate.
