His remarks triggered a wave of responses on social media, with users expressing mixed opinions. Some agreed with Pai, blaming the state government for increasing financial burdens on commuters. Others, however, highlighted that the fare revision was a joint decision involving both the Centre and the Karnataka government. They pointed out that BMRCL (Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited) functions as a partnership between the two, with fare adjustments made by the central government-appointed Fare Fixation Committee.

Amid the growing backlash, BMRCL announced a revision to its fare structure on Thursday, reducing the maximum increase from 100% to 71%. Despite this adjustment, the minimum fare remains ₹10, while the maximum fare stays at ₹90.

The fare hike has reignited discussions on public transport affordability, taxation policies, and the government’s role in ensuring equitable access to urban infrastructure.
