Sushil Kumar Gupta, Educationalist and Rajya Sabha MP (Member of Parliament) from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) asked a question pertaining to the caste wise breakdown of student dropout rates in central universities and IITs (Indian Institute of Technology).
In a reply to this, Minister of State for Education, Subhas Sarkar responded by disclosing the statistics in hand pertaining to this. 17,545 students from reserved categories have dropped out from Central universities between 2019 and 2023 and 8139 students from the reserved category have dropped out from IITs during the same time period.
The caveat with this data is that most of the drop outs are post graduates or Ph.D students. Having the option of taking up government jobs or better opportunities elsewhere was the primary factor responsible for the drop outs according to the minister. For undergraduate courses however, opting for an unsuitable course or inability to cope with academic pressure were the major factors.
The minister clarified that steps are being taken to reduce the number of drop outs such as promoting group learning, providing counseling, holding additional classes, providing mentors and encouraging co curricular activities.
Meanwhile Priyank Kharge, Minister of IT/BT, for the state of Karnataka questioned BJP’s commitment to inclusive education and social upliftment.
Alarming statistics!
The data from Parliament reveals that over 25,000 SC/ST/OBC students left IITs & Central Universities in the last 5 years.
