BJP cannot understand the struggle of women: Priyanka

A statement by Prime Minister Modi indicating that were the Indian National Congress (INC) to come to power, wealth from the Hindu community including the mangalsutra (sacred thread symbolising marriage) will be given to their vote bank has resulted in outrage among the opposition parties.

INC leader Priyanka Gandhi addressed this remark in a recent rally which was held in Bengaluru on 23rd April. “The country has been independent for more than 70 years. Congress has been in power for 55 years. Has anyone stolen gold from you? Did anyone steal your mangalsutra? Indira Gandhi donated gold when India was at war. My mother’s mangalsutra has been sacrificed for this country. The truth is they cannot understand the struggle of women. The sense of service that exists among women is the basis for Indian culture. That sense of service is what ensures that a woman won’t sleep until all the others in the house have slept. Women will pledge their jewellery when their household undergoes financial problems. Women will sleep with hunger but will not allow others to sleep hungry. They cannot  understand these struggles,” Priyanka said.

Meanwhile, despite the controversy, Modi repeated the rhetoric in other rallies and even accused the INC of fiddling with the constitution to provide reservation for the Muslim community.
