A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake has struck Myanmar, leaving over 1,000 dead and thousands injured. Rescue operations are ongoing in Mandalay, the epicenter, as workers sift through the rubble in search of survivors. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has warned that the final death toll could exceed 10,000, given the extensive destruction.

The quake’s impact extended beyond Myanmar, with strong tremors reported in parts of India, including Meghalaya and Manipur, as well as in Bangladesh, particularly Dhaka and Chattogram, and China. Even Bangkok, located 900 kilometers away, felt the impact, causing structural damage and leading Thai authorities to declare a state of emergency. A partially constructed skyscraper in Bangkok collapsed, resulting in at least ten deaths and 100 missing workers.
India responded swiftly, launching ‘Operation Brahma’ to provide aid, sending 15 tonnes of relief supplies, including food, solar lamps, and kitchen sets via an IAF aircraft. The U.S. also pledged assistance despite recent budget cuts to USAID, which have hindered global humanitarian efforts. Meanwhile, China and Russia have dispatched aid and rescue teams.
Myanmar's military leader has made an unprecedented appeal for international assistance, as the country faces severe power and water shortages in the aftermath. Experts highlight that Myanmar’s location on the Sagaing fault line makes it highly susceptible to powerful earthquakes, with significant tremors recorded in 1946 and 2012.
As rescue operations continue, fears persist that the full extent of the disaster is yet to be realized.
