Online fashion retailer Myntra has filed a complaint with Bengaluru Police after falling prey to a sophisticated fraud scheme that led to a loss of Rs 1.1 crore in the city alone. The scam, involving fake refund claims, is part of a larger Rs 50 crore fraud affecting Myntra across India, with 5,529 orders flagged in Bengaluru.

According to the company’s complaint, fraudsters placed bulk orders for expensive items such as branded shoes, clothing, accessories, and jewellery. After making legitimate payments, they manipulated the refund system by falsely reporting missing or incorrect items in their shipments.
Explaining the modus operandi, police stated that scammers might order, for example, 10 pairs of shoes, but upon receiving the delivery, they would claim that the package contained only five pairs. Myntra’s refund policy for missing items was then exploited to receive money for the falsely claimed missing goods. Similar tactics were employed by fraudsters who ordered clothes, alleging mismatched sizes or colors to secure unwarranted refunds.
The Bengaluru Police are currently investigating the case, aiming to identify and apprehend the individuals behind the large-scale operation. This incident highlights the vulnerability of e-commerce platforms to refund fraud and emphasizes the need for stronger measures to detect and prevent misuse of customer-friendly policies.
