The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has announced major reforms in its accreditation process, following recommendations from the Dr. Radhakrishnan Committee.
Beginning April-May 2025, NAAC will introduce Basic (Binary) Accreditation, followed by Maturity-based Graded Levels (MBGL). Special committees are finalizing the framework for MBGL.
In response to recent challenges, including a CBI case involving its Peer Review system, NAAC has taken decisive measures to maintain credibility. The accreditation of the university implicated in the case has been revoked, and the institution is barred from applying for accreditation for five years. Additionally, all seven members of the involved Peer Team have been permanently disqualified from NAAC-related activities. NAAC will also review past assessments involving these members, withholding results where necessary.
To further enhance transparency, NAAC plans to implement IT-based solutions within the new accreditation frameworks. Meanwhile, institutions awaiting accreditation under the existing Revised Accreditation Framework (RAF) will have options. Those in Cycle 2 and beyond can retain their current grade until the new framework launches, while Cycle 1 institutions may opt for Basic accreditation, with previously paid fees adjusted. Institutions preferring the RAF process will undergo online assessments for colleges and hybrid evaluations for universities.
These reforms aim to restore trust and fairness in accreditation, ensuring a rigorous and corruption-free process.
