The Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 19th. He addressed a gathering during the inauguration. “I got the opportunity to visit Nalanda in the first 10 days after taking oath for my third term. This is not only my good fortune, but I also see it as an auspicious sign for India's development journey. Nalanda was once the epicentre of India's educational identity. Education goes beyond the realms of borders, profits and losses... Education shapes our thoughts and behaviour. During ancient times, admission to Nalanda University was not based on the nationality of the student. People from different walks of life used to come here in pursuit of education,” Modi said.

The construction of the building commenced in 2017. The university has been built in close proximity to the ruins of the ancient Nalanda University which was damaged by invaders in the 12th Century. The cost of construction for the university has been Rs 1,749 crore. “Nalanda is the first-ever campus in India which will work on the model of- Net Zero energy, Net Zero emissions and Net Zero waste building on the idea of 'Be your own light', this campus will guide the world,” Modi remarked.
