  • Namma Metro hits record ridership of 9.08 lakh on April 17
  • Fare hike in February didn’t deter commuter preference
  • Kempegowda station remains the network’s busiest transit hub

On April 17, Namma Metro reached a historic milestone by recording its highest-ever daily ridership, with 9,08,153 passengers boarding the trains, as reported by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). This record-breaking number comes just weeks after BMRCL implemented a steep fare hike in February 2025. Despite public concerns over the increased cost tickets, the metro system continues to be the go-to mode of transport for thousands of Bengalureans struggling with the city’s persistent traffic congestion.

According to the data released, the Purple Line saw the highest usage with 4,35,516 commuters, while the Green Line had 2,85,240 passengers. The crucial Kempegowda interchange station, which connects the two lines, witnessed 1,87,397 people switching between routes, highlighting its central role in the metro network.

The fare revision introduced by BMRCL included an increase in the maximum ticket price from Rs 60 to Rs 90, and the minimum smart card balance was also raised from Rs 50 to Rs 90. This 50-90% hike led to the public backlash, particularly from daily wage earners and officegoers.

However, the record-breaking numbers suggest that, for many, the metro remains a faster, more efficient alternative to road travel in the city.
