Multimodal connectivity at eight metro stations along Whitefield line
Plans afoot to create dedicated cycle lanes near these metro stations
Multimodal solutions will be extended to 30 metro stations in Phase 2B
Bengaluru is gearing up for a transformative shift in its transportation infrastructure, focusing on enhancing accessibility and promoting multimodal connectivity at eight metro stations along the Whitefield line.
The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), as part of its Station Accessibility Plan, has identified these stations and submitted a comprehensive report to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
During a panel discussion titled ‘Bengaluru: Ready for a Transformational Mobility Shift?’ hosted by B.PAC (Bangalore Political Action Committee), Shamanth Kuchangi, Technical Head at DULT, shared insights into the project.
Kuchangi highlighted plans to create dedicated cycle lanes near these metro stations and foster multimodal integration, aligning with the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) policy.
Multimodal solutions will be extended to 30 stations in Phase 2B (from Outer Ring Road to Kempegowda International Airport) and Phase 2, thanks to support from the Asian Development Bank’s technical assistance program.
Residents have already shown enthusiasm for recently introduced feeder bus services in HSR Layout, prompting demands for similar services in localities like Malleshwaram, Whitefield, and Bellandur to enhance first and last-mile connectivity.
Furthermore, BS Prahlad, Chief Engineer of Road Infrastructure at Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), announced BMRCL’s commitment to reinstalling bollards on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to reinstate the priority bus lane.
This 17-kilometre bus lane, from Central Silk Board to K R Pura, was temporarily discontinued due to space constraints during the construction of the Blue Line of the metro. However, with the completion of metro work and removal of barricades, the priority bus lane will be restored, benefiting commuters.
