Presenting the Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiled plans for seven new high-speed rail corridors, along with ship repair hubs in Varanasi and Patna, aimed at boosting connectivity, jobs and tourism.
In a major push to modernise India’s transport infrastructure, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday announced the development of seven new high-speed rail corridors across the country. The announcement was made during the presentation of the Union Budget, with the government aiming to significantly reduce travel time between key cities and accelerate economic growth.
Among the proposed corridors, the Delhi-Varanasi high-speed rail line has been highlighted as a flagship project. Once completed, the corridor is expected to drastically cut travel time between the national capital and one of India’s most important cultural and spiritual centres. The finance minister also confirmed that a separate high-speed rail corridor will be developed between Varanasi and Siliguri, strengthening connectivity between northern and eastern India.

The government’s vision extends beyond railways. To support inland water transport and industrial growth, Sitharaman announced the establishment of modern ship repair facilities in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and Patna, Bihar. These facilities are expected to enhance river-based transport, particularly along major waterways, and support regional trade and logistics.
Officials believe the combined impact of high-speed rail connectivity and improved water transport infrastructure will give a strong boost to regional development. The projects are expected to generate large-scale employment opportunities, especially in the construction and allied sectors, during both the building and operational phases.
Tourism is also expected to benefit significantly. With faster rail access to destinations like Varanasi, religious and cultural tourism is likely to see a sharp rise. Improved connectivity is expected to make travel more convenient for domestic and international visitors alike.
The finance minister stated that the seven high-speed rail corridors are part of a broader strategy to strengthen India’s economic activity, improve regional balance, and modernise transportation networks. Detailed project reports and timelines for implementation are expected to be announced in the coming months.
