A sudden explosion near Red Fort Metro Station in Delhi triggered panic as three parked cars caught fire. 9 were killed and several others were injured in the evening incident.
A sudden explosion near Gate No. 1 of Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station created panic on Sunday evening. The blast occurred around 6:45 pm to 7:00 pm, leading to a major fire that engulfed three parked cars in the area.
According to initial reports, the explosion first occurred in one of the cars parked near the metro station. The fire then quickly spread to two other nearby vehicles, causing thick smoke and chaos in the crowded Red Fort locality, which usually witnesses heavy footfall in the evenings.
Tragically, 9 people lost their life in the incident, and several others sustained injuries. All injured individuals were immediately shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Following the explosion, six to seven fire engines were rushed to the scene to bring the blaze under control. Firefighters battled the flames for nearly an hour before managing to douse the fire completely.
Delhi Police officials briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the situation. Teams from the forensic and bomb disposal squads have been deployed to examine the site and identify the cause of the explosion.
Authorities are yet to confirm whether the incident was triggered by an explosive material or a CNG cylinder blast. Given recent security alerts, officials are not ruling out any possibility, including a suspected terror link.
The explosion comes just days after four suspects were arrested from Faridabad and Uttar Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir Police seized nearly 2,900 kg of explosive material. This has raised serious concerns about possible connections between the two incidents.
Police have cordoned off the area, and an intensive investigation is underway to establish whether this was an accident or a deliberate act.
