Ministry of Home Affairs issues official Gazette notification detailing house-level questions to be asked nationwide during Census 2027 Phase 1.
The Government of India has issued an official notification detailing the questions that will be asked during Phase 1 of Census 2027. The notification was released by the Ministry of Home Affairs and published in The Gazette of India.
As per the notification, census officials will ask 33 specific questions during house-to-house visits across the country. This phase focuses on collecting basic but critical information about houses, households and living conditions. Officials have clarified that the information will be collected only for census purposes, strictly by authorised census officers, and will remain confidential.
Notification of questionnaire of Phase I of Census of India 2027 - Houselisting & Housing Census has been issued. The questionnaire for Phase II i.e. Population Enumeration will be notified in due course.

Census officials will first record details to uniquely identify each structure:
• Building number (municipal, local authority or census number)
• Census house number

Questions will then focus on the physical nature of the house:
• Main material of the floor
• Main material of the walls
• Main material of the roof
• Current use of the house (residential, commercial or mixed)
• Overall condition of the house
Basic household details will be collected next:
• Household number
• Number of people usually living in the household
• Name of the head of the household
• Sex of the head of the household
• Social category of the head (Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or Other)
This section covers housing ownership and amenities:
• Ownership status of the house
• Number of rooms used exclusively by the household
• Number of married couples living in the household
• Main source of drinking water
• Availability of drinking water
• Main source of lighting
• Availability of a latrine
• Type of latrine
• Waste water outlet system
• Availability of bathing facility
• Availability of kitchen and LPG/PNG connection
• Main cooking fuel used

The final set of questions relates to household assets and connectivity:
• Availability of radio or transistor
• Availability of television
• Internet access
• Availability of laptop or computer
• Availability of telephone, mobile phone or smartphone
• Availability of bicycle, scooter, motorcycle or moped
• Availability of car, jeep or van
• Main cereal consumed by the household
• Mobile number (to be used only for census-related communication)
