A developing low-pressure system near Sri Lanka strengthens rapidly, with Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, South Andhra and parts of Karnataka placed under weather alerts.

A low-pressure system developing over the southwest Bay of Bengal and close to the Sri Lankan coastline has intensified steadily, with meteorological forecasts indicating that it will strengthen into a cyclonic storm within the next few hours. Once it reaches full strength, the system will be officially named Cyclone Ditwah.

Sri Lanka has already begun experiencing the early impact of the system, with heavy rainfall and strong winds lashing several regions. Overflowing rivers and rising water levels have caused localised flooding, adding to the disruptions across affected districts.

As per current projections, November 30 (Sunday) is expected to be the crucial day when Cyclone Ditwah approaches and impacts the Tamil Nadu coast. The landfall region is expected to see intense rainfall accompanied by 80-90 kmph wind speeds and high sea waves. The weather pattern is also likely to influence Puducherry and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, bringing widespread rain across these regions.

In anticipation of the impact, multiple Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvallur and Thanjavur, have been placed under yellow and orange alerts for today and tomorrow. The state administration has reviewed preparedness measures, and authorities have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the deep sea for the next five days due to dangerous marine conditions.

Karnataka is also expected to experience indirect effects of the system. Bengaluru and surrounding regions may witness dense cloud cover and a sharp drop in temperature, leading to significantly colder conditions over the next couple of days, according to weather predictions.

With Cyclone Ditwah intensifying steadily, southern coastal states remain on high alert as the system moves closer to the Indian shoreline.
