EOW Notice to DK Shivakumar in Herald Case

Delhi Police EOW summons Karnataka Dy CM D K Shivakumar over Young Indian donations in National Herald case; he calls it harassment, defends funds

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police has served a notice to Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar in connection with the ongoing National Herald investigation. The summons, dated November 29, seeks comprehensive financial records related to donations allegedly made by him to Young Indian (YI), the company at the centre of the case.

Officials have asked Shivakumar to provide his income‑tax returns, donation certificates, financial statements, and details of associated entities. He has also been directed to explain the source, purpose, and eventual use of the funds transferred to YI, and clarify whether any third parties instructed or influenced these transactions.

Reacting to the development, Shivakumar described the notice as “shocking” and alleged that it amounted to harassment. He stated that both he and his brother had already submitted all relevant details to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which has filed a chargesheet in the matter. Defending the donations, he insisted that the money was legitimately theirs after paying taxes, and referred to Young Indian as “our institution.” He further claimed that the fresh police action was politically motivated, aimed at targeting Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and creating confusion among party supporters.

The EOW probe stems from an FIR registered on October 3 following an ED complaint. The case names Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and others for allegedly conspiring to acquire Associated Journals Ltd (AJL) through Young Indian, which controls assets linked to the National Herald. Investigators are now examining whether donations connected to Shivakumar were routed under external instructions and whether he was aware of their ultimate use, as part of the broader inquiry into AJL’s financial dealings.
