From November 15, vehicles without FASTag to pay higher toll fees on National Highways

The government tightens toll rules to encourage digital payments. Cash payments will be double, while UPI users pay 1.25 times the standard fee, improving efficiency and transparency.

In a bid to promote digital payments and reduce cash usage, the government has announced stricter toll rules for National Highway plazas. From November 15, 2025, vehicles without a valid FASTag will have to pay higher toll fees.

Under the new rules, cash payments for vehicles without FASTag will be double the standard fee. For instance, a vehicle normally paying Rs. 100 via FASTag will have to pay Rs. 200 in cash. Those opting to pay digitally through Unified Payment Interface (UPI) will be charged 1.25 times the usual fee, meaning the same vehicle would pay Rs. 125 via UPI.

The amendment comes as part of changes to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, aimed at improving toll collection, boosting transparency, and reducing congestion at toll plazas.

Authorities said the move will encourage digital adoption, streamline toll operations, and enhance the overall user experience on National Highways. Travelers are expected to face smoother journeys and shorter waiting times due to reduced cash transactions.

Additionally, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched an annual FASTag pass for Rs. 3,000, making it easier for frequent highway users to pay tolls digitally without repeated recharges.

With these changes, the government hopes to make toll collection more efficient, transparent, and hassle-free, while promoting cashless and faster travel on national highways.
