Germany eases travel for Indians with visa-free airport transit during Chancellor Merz’s India visit, allowing stays only within airport premises
Germany has announced a significant relaxation of travel rules for Indian passport holders, introducing a visa-free transit facility through its airports. The decision was unveiled during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s official visit to India, marking his first trip to Asia since assuming office.
The new arrangement allows Indian travellers transiting through German airports en route to other destinations to do so without requiring a separate transit visa. However, the facility is limited to airport premises, meaning passengers cannot enter German cities without a valid visa. The move is expected to ease travel for thousands of Indian passengers who frequently use German airports as international transit hubs.
Chancellor Merz is on a two-day visit to India from January 12–13, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Germany and the 25th anniversary of their strategic partnership. His visit underscores the growing importance of bilateral ties and aims to strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors.
During discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, both leaders focused on expanding collaboration in education, with India inviting German universities to establish campuses in the country. The two sides also addressed pressing global challenges, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the humanitarian situation in Gaza, reflecting their shared commitment to international stability and peace.

The announcement of visa-free transit is seen as a step towards enhancing people-to-people connections and facilitating smoother travel experiences. It also highlights Germany’s intent to deepen engagement with India at a time when both nations are seeking stronger economic, educational, and political partnerships.
Merz’s visit is expected to build on ongoing high-level exchanges and reaffirm the shared vision of India and Germany for a forward-looking relationship that benefits citizens of both countries while contributing to broader global cooperation.
