The Ministry of Education released the 10th edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) on Thursday, September 4, placing the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-Madras) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru at the top in the overall category. IIT-Mumbai secured third place.
The NIRF rankings evaluated institutions across 17 categories, covering universities, research institutions, engineering, law, medicine, management, pharmacy, architecture, agriculture, open and skill universities, State public universities, and a new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) category. Institutions were assessed on teaching, research, graduation outcomes, inclusivity, and perception.
In subject-specific lists, IIT-Madras was named the best engineering institute and topped the innovation and SDG categories, with IIT-Delhi following in engineering. IISc Bengaluru led in research and was adjudged the best university, with Jawaharlal Nehru University and Manipal Academy of Higher Education placed second and third, respectively.
IIM Ahmedabad maintained its lead in management
Among professional institutes, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad maintained its lead in management, followed by IIM-Bangalore and IIM-Kozhikode. Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi, retained the top spot in pharmacy, while the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi was ranked first in both medical and dental education. The National Law School of India, Bengaluru, was declared the best law college.
For specialized institutions, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Delhi, led in agriculture. In the category of State public universities, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, secured the top position, followed by Anna University, Chennai. Indira Gandhi National Open University was recognized as the best open university, and Symbiosis Skills and Professional University led in skilling.
At the undergraduate level, Hindu College, Miranda House, and Hansraj College, all in Delhi, claimed the top three positions. In architecture, IIT-Roorkee stood first, with NIT Kozhikode and IIT-Kharagpur trailing.
The NIRF, introduced in 2015, continues to serve as a national benchmark for evaluating higher education institutions.
