The Government of India has introduced the e-passport facility, a next-generation travel document designed to boost security and streamline international travel. Launched as a pilot on April 1, 2024, the e-passport is currently available at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs), with plans to gradually expand access across the country.

E-passport includes an embedded RFID chip that securely stores biometric details
The e-passport includes an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and antenna that securely store biometric details such as fingerprints, digital photographs, and iris scans. This contactless chip encrypts personal data, making it more secure and reducing the chances of forgery or duplication. The e-passport can be easily identified by a small gold-colored emblem printed below the title on the front cover.
Fully compliant with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, the e-passport offers faster verification at immigration checkpoints and improved transparency.
To apply, Indian citizens must visit the official Passport Seva portal, register or log in, complete the e-passport application form, choose a nearby PSK or POPSK, pay the fee online, and book an appointment. On the appointment date, applicants must visit the selected center for biometric enrollment and document verification.
This rollout marks a significant upgrade in India’s passport system, promising greater security and convenience for travelers nationwide.
