Minister Pralhad Joshi drove a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai to Parliament, marking India’s push for clean, zero-emission mobility and green energy future

India took a symbolic leap toward clean transport on Thursday when Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi arrived at Parliament in a hydrogen-powered car. The move underscored the government’s commitment to advancing green hydrogen as a cornerstone of the nation’s energy future.

Joshi drove from Atal Akshaya Urja Bhavan in Delhi to Parliament House in a Toyota Mirai, a second-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle developed in collaboration with Toyota Kirloskar Motor and the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE). The car runs entirely on hydrogen, producing electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, with water vapor as its only emission. With a driving range of nearly 650 km and a refueling time of under five minutes, the Mirai is considered one of the world’s most advanced zero-emission vehicles.

The minister highlighted that green hydrogen represents the 'fuel of the future' and will play a pivotal role in India’s clean energy transition and self-reliance goals under Atmanirbhar Bharat. He emphasized that hydrogen mobility is not only environmentally friendly but also practical for Indian conditions. Trials of hydrogen vehicles are expected to expand over the next two years, paving the way for wider adoption across the country.

Joshi praised Toyota Kirloskar’s technology and noted that the NISE–Toyota collaboration is a milestone in India’s journey toward sustainable transport. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of clean mobility and climate action.

The event was attended by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Nayak, Toyota Kirloskar Motor Executive Vice President Vikram Gulati, MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi, NISE Director General Dr. Mohammad Rihan, and National Green Hydrogen Mission Director Abhay Bakre.

India’s hydrogen push signals a new era in energy innovation, with vehicles that emit only water leading the way.
