Indian Railways boosts nationwide capacity with major coach augmentations to handle the sudden surge in passenger demand after widespread IndiGo flight cancellations.
Indian Railways has stepped in to ease the sudden travel pressure caused by widespread IndiGo flight cancellations, adding 116 extra coaches to 37 trains across the country. According to official data, the move covers 114 augmented trips, ensuring smoother travel and better accommodation for passengers struggling to find alternative options.
Southern Railway has carried out the largest number of augmentations, strengthening 18 trains with additional Sleeper Class and Chair Car coaches. Northern Railway has enhanced capacity on eight trains, deploying 3AC and Chair Car coaches to manage heavy movement on key northern corridors.

Western Railway has added 2AC and 3AC coaches to four high-demand trains, effective 6 December 2025, facilitating travel between western states and the national capital. East Central Railway has upgraded the Rajendra Nagar-New Delhi (12309) service with extra 2AC coaches across five trips from 6-10 December, benefiting the Bihar–Delhi sector.
East Coast Railway has added 2AC coaches to the Bhubaneswar-New Delhi trains (20817/20811/20823), improving long-distance travel between Odisha and Delhi. Eastern Railway has strengthened three trains with Sleeper Class coaches across six trips on 7-8 December to meet increased regional demand.

For the Northeast, the Northeast Frontier Railway has augmented two major trains with Sleeper and 3AC coaches across eight trips each, ensuring uninterrupted capacity for passengers travelling between the region and the rest of the country.
With the aviation disruption continuing, Indian Railways’ swift augmentation aims to stabilise national travel and ensure passengers have reliable alternatives.
