Kempegowda Airport overtakes Mumbai in October domestic traffic, handling 20,819 flights vs Mumbai’s 20,540, marking Karnataka’s aviation pride
Kempegowda International Airport has once again made headlines by overtaking Mumbai Airport in domestic flight operations, a milestone that underscores Bengaluru’s growing prominence in India’s aviation sector.
According to data released by the Airports Authority of India, Kempegowda Airport handled 20,819 domestic flights in October, surpassing Mumbai Airport’s 20,540. This achievement places Bengaluru ahead of Mumbai in the domestic air traffic rankings, a matter of pride for Karnataka and its capital city.
Traditionally, Mumbai Airport has been recognized as the country’s second busiest hub, largely due to its heavy international traffic. While Mumbai continues to lead in overall flight movements, Bengaluru’s rise in domestic operations highlights the city’s expanding role as a key aviation gateway.

Kempegowda Airport managed 279 domestic flights in October alone, reflecting the increasing demand for connectivity from Bengaluru to destinations across India. The surge is attributed to the city’s booming economy, rapid urban growth, and its position as a hub for technology and industry.
Officials note that this development is not only a testament to Bengaluru’s infrastructure but also to the efficiency of airport management in handling rising passenger volumes. For Karnataka, the achievement reinforces Kempegowda Airport’s reputation as a symbol of progress and pride.
As domestic travel continues to grow, Bengaluru’s airport is expected to play an even larger role in shaping India’s aviation landscape, offering both convenience to travelers and prestige to the state.
