  • Astrologers suggest abhisheka, chanting, and charity
  • Science links eclipses to natural atmospheric changes

Astrologers and scholars explain the rituals, remedies, and scientific perspectives on what must be done after the lunar eclipse ends.

For those who believe in astrology, an eclipse is more than a celestial event – it is seen as a period of both auspicious and inauspicious influences. With the September 7 total lunar eclipse casting a rare blood-red hue, questions naturally arise: who benefits, who faces challenges, and what must be done once the eclipse is over?

Astrologers point out that scientific and astrological perspectives differ. While science views an eclipse as a natural phenomenon caused by the alignment of celestial bodies, astrology narrates symbolic interpretations through mythological stories such as Samudra Manthana. Regardless of belief, it is widely accepted that environmental changes occur during and after an eclipse, and hence precaution is advised.

Once the eclipse ends, tradition prescribes purification. Homes and temples are usually cleaned, and temple rituals such as abhisheka are performed. Many temples remain closed during the eclipse, reopening only after purification.

Astrologers including Kabiyadi Jayaram Acharya and Dr. Selvappille Iyengar of Mysuru recommend specific post-eclipse practices:

•    Performing abhisheka to deities
•    Chanting God’s names, reciting stotras, or engaging in japa
•    Donating food, clothing, and essentials to the needy
•    Offering grains and fodder to cows the following day
•    Looking into sesame oil before bathing and dedicating it to God

Astrology also cautions that the impact of an eclipse depends on zodiac signs (rashi) and constellations (nakshatra). For some, it may bring obstacles; for others, opportunities. Those worried about adverse effects are advised to follow remedial rituals.

At the same time, scholars highlight that eclipses do not affect all individuals uniformly, nor are they purely harmful. Scientists insist that eclipses do not directly harm humans but acknowledge links to natural disruptions like earthquakes, landslides, and tidal shifts.

Ultimately, whether to follow rituals or not is a personal choice. Some dismiss them as superstition, while others faithfully observe traditions. However, astrologers argue that observing simple post-eclipse practices causes no harm and may provide peace of mind.
