Vice President election scheduled for September 9: EC announces timeline

The Election Commission of India has released the official schedule for the election of the next Vice President of India. As per the announcement, polling will be conducted on September 9, and the last date for filing nominations is August 21.

The Election Commission of India has released the official schedule for the election of the next Vice President of India. As per the announcement, polling will be conducted on September 9, and the last date for filing nominations is August 21.

The votes will be counted on the same day as polling, so the results of the vice president elections will be announced quickly. The election was announced after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned due to health reasons.

The Ministry of Home Affairs officially noted the vacancy on July 22. According to the law, the vice president election must be held as soon as possible after such a vacancy. The elected Vice President will serve a full five-year term starting from the date they take office. 

Secret ballot by members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha

The Vice President is elected through a secret ballot by members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The process follows the system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote, ensuring fair and representative outcomes. The Election Commission conducts the election by following the rules laid out in the Constitution and ensuring it follows democratic process as well.

Dhankhar, who had been Vice President , stepped down after chairing the first day of the Monsoon Session in Parliament. Details regarding nomination filing, scrutiny of papers and withdrawal of candidatures will be made available in the official notification issued by the Election Commission.
