This would be used to alert users even if their phone is in the silent mode

Few devices did not respond conducively

This is a joint initiative of the Department of Telecommunications with NDMA

Android and iOS users across the country received an alert that stated “This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE sent through the Cell Broadcasting System by the Department of Telecommunication, Government of India. Please ignore this message as no action is required from your end. This message has been sent to test the Pan-India Emergency Alert System being implemented by the National Disaster Management Authority. It aims to enhance public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies,” over the past few days. This had left many perplexed as they did not understand the context or timing of these messages.

The Department of Telecommunications has now clarified that this alert message was curated as part of an initiative with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). In case of emergencies, this system of broadcasting would be used that would alert users with a strong buzz and vibrations even if their phone is in the silent mode. These include natural calamities and other unforeseen predicaments as well. A few devices however did not respond conducively and the Department of Telecommunications is looking for a way to get around this.

The collaboration between the Department of Telecommunications and the NDMA has been ongoing since July 2023.
