The National Commision for Women (NCW) has submitted a report to President Droupadi Murmu pertaining to allegations of sexual assault and land grabbing in the Sandeshkhali village located in the North 24 Paraganas district of West Bengal. The report has made suggestions such as the imposition of President’s rule in West Bengal and transferring police officials in the region. “Despite Sheikh Shahjahan’s known criminal record and numerous complaints against him, no action had been taken against the accused. Upon visiting Sandeshkhali, the Internal Committee found numerous complaints of physical and sexual abuse, land accusations, and wrongful arrests of male family members. However, their attempts to meet with local authorities, including the district magistrate and the superintendent of police, were met with negligence and apathy,” the report highlighted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is currently conducting rallies across West Bengal did not miss out on the opportunity to hit out at the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over this incident. “Whatever happened in Sandeshkhali is a matter of shame. The TMC government is trying to protect the person responsible for this. However, they have received a setback from the high court as well as the Supreme Court… The storm of Sandeshkhali will reach every part of West Bengal,” he stated.
