The Court determined that there was no substantial evidence to suggest the leak was widespread enough to compromise the integrity of the entire exam. However, the bench criticized the National Testing Agency (NTA) for several procedural lapses.
Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized the need for the NTA to avoid inconsistencies in its operations, stating, "We have said that the NTA must now avoid the flip flops which it has made in this case. These flip-flops in the NTA do not serve the interest of the students."
The Court questioned the NTA's decisions to allow candidates to change exam centers and to open a "rear door" for new registrations. Additionally, the bench highlighted the NTA's controversial move to award grace marks to 1,563 students due to receiving the wrong question paper. This decision was later retracted, and those students were required to retake the exam.
The Supreme Court's judgment aims to maintain the sanctity of the NEET-UG exam while calling for improved consistency and reliability in the NTA's procedures to better serve the interests of the students.
