A street dog in Chennai was beaten to death by the residents of Royapuram after it went on a spree and bit 29 people. It was later found to have been infected with rabies. While the people underwent treatment and The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) was grappling with ways to contain the street dog menace, a user on the microblogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter) stoked a controversial debate by suggesting that aggression by dogs are on account of the reaction of human beings around it. “An unprovoked attack like this is INCREDIBLY rare. In most cases dogs only attack when they feel threatened and agitated,” the user stated.

There used to be a dog in my area that was very friendly but some people complained it showed aggression towards them. I found out they'd thrown stones...

She also had a bunch of tips as to how one must respond when attacked by dogs. These included stopping when the dog gets worked up, using a calm, sweetened approach while speaking to them and even using a local language while speaking to them. “Use a sweetened higher pitch of voice and talk to them, reassure them preferably in the local language, since most strays understand the local language and just engage them. I usually just sweetly say "What, my love? What do you want? I'm not gonna hurt you!" and the tail starts wagging,” she said.

Netizens had a mixed range of responses to this advice. “This is from someone who has NO idea about animal behaviour and never even bothered to educate himself about it. It is people like this who are responsible for all the people losing their lives to stray dog attacks,” a user commented.
