According to a latest report on the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), Bengaluru has the third lowest percentage (1.47%) of poor people living in this city in the country, only next to Chennai (1.03%) and Mumbai (1.21%), while Delhi has 3.43%, Hyderabad has 2.52% and Kolkata has 2.56% of poor population living in these metro cities.
The number of poor people living in Bengaluru has gone down from 2.05% to 1.47%. This number indicates that poverty has been considerably alleviated in Bengaluru.
Bengaluru is among the list of most expensive cities to live, which also indicates that most the population can afford to live an expensive life here and interestingly the percentage of the poor people living in this city is below 1.5%.
Within Karnataka, Ramanagar has the lowest poverty index at just 0.88% of poor people, followed by Bengaluru Rural with only 0.99% of poor people. Yadgir district has the highest number of poor people with 25.38% of the population being poor.
The MPI report was constituted based on the Alkire-Foster (AF) methodology that considered overlapping deprivations in health, education, and living standards.
NITI Aayog, as the nodal agency for MPI, was responsible for constructing an indigenised index for monitoring the performance of states and union territories in addressing multidimensional poverty.
