Steps being taken to eliminate toll plazas with GPS technology
Introduce new GPS based technology-driven approach for toll collection
New bill will be introduced to ensure toll payments for using the roads
India used to incur an annual loss of ₹12,000 crores due to prolonged waits at toll plazas. While FASTag has somewhat mitigated this loss, yet it remains an inefficient solution. To bring this loss down to zero, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari is taking steps to eliminate toll plazas and introduce a new technology-driven approach.
FASTag has indeed been a game-changer for the toll system in India, reducing average waiting times from 8 minutes to just 47 seconds. However, it hasn’t fully addressed the issue of congestion, primarily because toll plazas themselves create bottlenecks. FASTag, as a system, cannot rectify this structural problem. Hence, the most effective solution is to eliminate these bottlenecks using appropriate technology.
This is precisely what the new system aims to achieve. It will eliminate all toll plazas and replace FASTag with GPS technology, utilizing satellite data for toll collection. While the exact technology is yet to be finalized, Nitin Gadkari has assured that it will be state-of-the-art.

Moreover, this new system significantly reduces infrastructure and manpower costs. It can efficiently collect tolls even in remote areas, without requiring heavy infrastructure investments.
With the implementation of GPS technology, toll charges will be based on the distance traveled, reducing the cost burden by 50%. This system is similar to the European Electronic Toll Service (EETS), which ensures the smooth flow of regulated traffic across European countries.
However, a critical issue in India is the absence of laws to penalize toll tax evaders. To address this problem, a new bill will be introduced to ensure that individuals who do not have the appropriate number plates or systems in place cannot evade toll payments while using the roads.
