OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Agent, a powerful new tool that can autonomously perform tasks using a virtual computer. This marks a major step toward more human-like, task-oriented artificial general intelligence (AGI).

The ChatGPT Agent is designed to handle complex activities without repeated instructions. It can browse the internet, manage files, follow step-by-step goals, and complete tasks on its own. For example, a user could ask it to gather research, organise data, or plan a schedule — and the agent would complete the job from start to finish.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared the update on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “You can feel the AGI now,” referring to how advanced the system has become in handling real-world tasks.
This upgraded agent works within a virtual environment giving it the ability to use tools like browsers or file systems, which is much like a human assistant would. It’s currently being tested with a small group of users, and OpenAI plans to expand access gradually.
With this launch, OpenAI is moving closer to its goal of making AI more useful, reliable, and able to support real-life workflows as well.
