The Supreme Court is set to hear a crucial petition on Wednesday seeking the formation of a judicial commission headed by a retired apex court judge to investigate the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists. Filed by three residents of the Union Territory—Fatesh Kumar Shahu, Mohammad Junaid, and Vicky Kumar—the petition also demands the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure accountability.

The petitioners urged the Centre, Jammu and Kashmir government, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to formulate an action plan to enhance security for civilians and tourists in the region.

The petition comes amid heightened tensions at the Line of Control (LoC), with Indian forces responding to recent ceasefire violations by Pakistan. The Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs) from both nations communicated via hotline, where India strongly warned Pakistan against repeated violations.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), which met to assess the situation, linked the attack to attempts to derail Jammu and Kashmir’s ongoing electoral process and its forward momentum in economic development.

In response, India has suspended key diplomatic arrangements like the Indus Waters Treaty and closed the Attari Integrated Check Post. The government has also granted full operational autonomy to the armed forces to respond as needed.
