In response to the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam which claimed 26 lives, India has taken a series of tough actions against Pakistan. The attack, which occurred on April 22, led to an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the meeting, top leaders including the Defence, External Affairs and Home Minister along with the National Security Advisor, agreed on significant retaliatory steps.

One of the most notable actions is India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, a decades-old water-sharing agreement with Pakistan. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated the treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan demonstrates a clear break from supporting terrorism. Additionally, India has begun downgrading diplomatic relations, cutting down the number of staff in both high commissions from 55 to 30 by May
India has also expelled all Pakistani military advisors in New Delhi, declared them persona non grata, and announced it will withdraw its own military advisors from Islamabad. The SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals has been suspended, and existing visas under this program have been revoked. The only operational land border crossing at Attari has also been ordered closed.
