BJP's 'nari shakti' call in Bengal now lies in tatters: Sagarika
Bhojpuri actor cum playback singer Pawan Singh who was earlier announced as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Asanol in West Bengal has withdrawn from the electoral race. He made an announcement in this regard on the microblogging platform X (formerly known as Twitter). “I express my heartfelt gratitude to the top leadership of Bharatiya Janata Party. The party trusted me and declared me as the candidate from Asansol but due to some reason I will not be able to contest the elections from Asansol,” he stated in his post.
JPNadda— Pawan Singh (@PawanSingh909) March 3, 2024
Earlier critics from the opposition parties had pointed out his alleged misogyny and stereotypical view of Bengalis in some of his songs. “Breaking news. Trinamool Congress impact! BJP India’s Asansol candidate withdraws after huge backlash on the candidate’s sexist misogynist videos. The BJP’s ‘nari shakti’ call in Bengal now lies in tatters, revealed for what it is–hollow and meaningless,” Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from Trinamool Congress (TMC) Sagarika Ghoshe wrote on X after his announcement of withdrawal. Bollywood actor Shatrugan Sinha is currently the MP from Asanol representing the TMC. The BJP is however attempting to further the gains they realised in the 2019 Lok Sabha election wherein they won in 18 out of the 42 seats across West Bengal.
