In an unexpected career choice that has stirred conversations across China, a 26-year-old woman named Huang, a journalism graduate from the elite Peking University, has opted to work in the university’s canteen rather than pursue a traditional white-collar job.

After completing her master’s degree in 2022, Huang had interned at several top internet firms and state-run media outlets. However, she found herself drawn not to KPIs and constant connectivity, but to the satisfaction of hands-on work and a simpler life. Currently employed as a food server and kitchen aide, Huang begins her day early, performing physically demanding tasks like chopping vegetables and serving meals, often working long hours on her feet.
Despite earning a modest monthly salary of 6,000 yuan—significantly lower than the 20,000 yuan many of her peers earn—Huang says she finds more joy in this role than she ever did in the corporate world. She has even expressed hopes of becoming a canteen manager someday.
Her choice has garnered both praise and criticism on Chinese social media. Supporters commend her for prioritizing personal happiness over societal expectations, while detractors argue that her decision is a misuse of elite education.
Coming from a modest background in Hunan province, Huang says her decision was met with concern from her parents, but remains firm in following a path that feels right to her.
