Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary, Canada, on June 16, 2025, to participate in the G7 Summit, where global leaders are grappling with the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. While security concerns in the Middle East dominate the discussions, PM Modi is using the platform to amplify the voice of the Global South and push for inclusive global development.

Amid the volatile backdrop of the Israel-Iran tensions, the Summit opened with a divided front. The United States has refused to back a joint G7 call for ceasefire, prompting President Trump to leave the Summit prematurely after warning Iran to engage in talks “before it’s too late.” Despite this, other leaders, including those from Germany, the UK, and France, are urging diplomatic restraint and stressing the importance of protecting civilians.

Modi’s focus, however, remains firmly on broader global equity. In his bilateral and multilateral meetings, he is urging the G7 nations to consider the challenges faced by developing countries—especially those linked to energy access, climate vulnerability, digital inequality, and food insecurity. He emphasized that while security concerns are valid, the developmental needs of the Global South must not be overshadowed.
Canada, hosting this year’s Summit, has welcomed India’s input, especially in areas like clean energy partnerships, global health initiatives, and equitable digital infrastructure. Modi’s participation reflects India’s growing influence in shaping global dialogue, particularly on behalf of nations not formally part of the G7.
As the conflict in West Asia creates economic uncertainty worldwide, Modi’s call for a balanced, inclusive global approach resonates with several non-G7 stakeholders and adds a critical dimension to the Summit's outcomes.
