Caste-based politics is being played out in a full fledged manner in the Lok Sabha. Leaders of the Indian National Congress (INC) who have been firm on their demand for a caste census across India raised the issue in the lower house as well.

Recently, leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi highlighted that the team behind the drafting of the budget was majorly composed of individuals from the upper caste. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakut hit back at Rahul Gandhi during his speech in the parliament. “Those whose caste is not known, talk about the caste census. I want to remind the Speaker that in this House itself, a former prime minister RG-1 had opposed reservation for OBCs,” Anurag said.

Rahul Gandhi reacted strongly to Anurag's comments. “You can insult me as much as you like, but we will pass the caste census in this Parliament. Whoever raises the issues of Adivasi, Dalit and the backward, is abused. I will happily accept these abuses. Anurag Thakur has abused me and insulted me. But I do not want any apology from him,” Rahul remarked. PM Modi however endorsed Anurag’s comments. “This speech by my young and energetic colleague, Shri Anurag Thakur is a must hear. A perfect mix of facts and humour, exposing the dirty politics of the INDI Alliance,” PM Modi stated on the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter).
