The Central government has appointed Poonam Gupta as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year term. Gupta, currently the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), will step into the role ahead of the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting scheduled for April 7-9, 2025. She succeeds Michael Patra, who retired in January.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved her selection, recognizing her extensive expertise in economic research and policy. Gupta is also a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and serves on the Advisory Council of the 16th Finance Commission.

Before leading NCAER, she worked as the Lead Economist for Global Macro and Market Research at the International Finance Corporation (IFC). She has also held research and teaching positions at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Delhi School of Economics, and the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).

Gupta holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, specializing in Macroeconomics, International Finance, and Trade. She also received the EXIM Bank Award in 1998 for her research in international economics.

Her appointment is expected to bring fresh insights into India’s economic policy and financial regulation, especially as the RBI navigates key monetary challenges in the coming years.
