In an unfortunate incident, actress Poonam Pandey died due to cervical cancer, aged 32.
The sad news was broken by her instagram team earlier today.
Even as the nation joins in mourning the death of the young actor, let’s understand what the cancer is all about and the related causes.
All about cervical cancer
In simple terms, it is a type of cancer that starts in the cervix. To the uninitiated, the cervix is the part that connects the uterus or womb to the vagina, the birth canal. Developing slowly over time, the cervix cells go through changes known as dysplasia. In this, abnormal cells begin to appear in the cervical tissue.
If they are not removed over time, these abnormal cells may become cancerous and spread into the cervix and the surrounding areas.
Symptoms
Vaginal bleeding which is seen after intercourse, or between periods or after menopause sets in.
Menstrual bleeding that is heavier than normal and lasts longer than normal.
Pelvic pain or pain during intercourse.
Swelling of the legs, pain in the abdomen.
Causes
The cancer is caused by Human Papillomavirus (HPV). It is spread through sexual contact. Surprisingly, the virus never causes any problems. Though in some cases, it may go away on its own, it can also cause changes in the cells that may lead to the cancer.
Treatment
The treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.
