Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, has made history as the first American to become the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Alongside the immense spiritual responsibility of the papacy, his new role comes with substantial financial compensation and exclusive privileges.

According to reports, Pope Leo XIV is entitled to a monthly salary of $33,000 — over ₹28 lakh — amounting to an annual income of approximately ₹3.4 crore. This salary places him on par with high-ranking global officials, such as U.S. presidents and university heads. However, it remains unclear whether he will accept the pay, as past popes, including Pope Francis, often declined personal salaries.

In addition to the salary, the pontiff enjoys extensive perks: around-the-clock meals, personal transportation including the Popemobile, a private pharmacy, and Vatican-managed healthcare and security. Upon retirement, he would be eligible for a pension of $3,300 per month (about ₹2.8 lakh), along with continued support for daily living needs.

The Vatican, meanwhile, continues to face financial strain, with a deficit exceeding $90 million in 2023. Donations like Peter’s Pence, contributing roughly ₹225 crore annually, remain vital.

Pope Leo XIV may also face U.S. tax obligations unless he renounces his citizenship, as American law requires citizens abroad to report foreign income—even earnings from a foreign government. Whether he will pay tax on his Vatican salary remains a legal and diplomatic question.
