President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Bengaluru on Friday to commemorate the golden jubilee of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS). She was received at HAL Airport by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who greeted her with a bouquet and a traditional shawl. Minister for Medical Education Sharan Prakash Patil and other dignitaries were also present.
In her inaugural address, the president congratulated NIMHANS’ faculty members, administrators and students on the occasion. “Your dedication to the noble cause of mental health has helped NIMHANS play an exemplary role in our society”, she noted.

As the event’s Chief Guest, President Murmu inaugurated several key facilities at NIMHANS, including a new Psychiatry Block, a Central Laboratory Complex, and a hostel building. Additionally, she unveiled advanced medical equipment, including a 3T AI-enabled MRI scanner and a DSA machine. The MRI scanner is designed to enhance early brain disease diagnosis through high-resolution imaging, while the DSA machine offers 3D rotational angiography for detecting brain damage.
To ensure security during the event, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B. Dayanand imposed a "Temporary No-Fly Zone" within a one-kilometer radius of the NIMHANS campus until 3 p.m. on Friday. This restriction prohibited the use of drones, UAVs, gliders, and non-scheduled aircraft.
The President's visit and the inauguration of cutting-edge facilities underscore the institute's pivotal role in advancing mental health and neuroscience research. The celebrations took place at the NIMHANS Convention Centre, marking a milestone in the institute’s 50-year legacy.
