Uber is exploring the launch of shuttle bus services in Bengaluru to alleviate the city’s notorious traffic congestion. Despite completing a successful trial run, the initiative has sparked significant resistance from private operators and regulatory authorities.

The proposed shuttle services aim to cater to IT-heavy corridors, offering air-conditioned buses with affordable ticket prices. Passengers will be able to book tickets and track buses through the Uber app, including real-time updates on arrivals. Uber believes the service could provide a reliable alternative to private vehicles, reducing congestion and commute times.
However, the initiative has met with pushback. Private transport operators argue that the service could impact their earnings significantly. Additionally, the Karnataka transport department has raised legal concerns, stating that the proposed services violate existing regulations. Officials have warned that any unauthorized Uber buses on the road could face seizure.
Critics also point out that many companies already provide dedicated buses for employee commutes, reducing the need for additional shuttle services. Meanwhile, Uber maintains that the initiative is a practical solution to the city’s traffic woes and could complement existing public transport options.
The government has yet to approve the service, leaving its future uncertain. The debate highlights the challenges of balancing innovation with regulatory frameworks and the interests of stakeholders.
