  • Activists used spray to blacken sign boards in Bengali
  • Activists instructed the manager to not use any third language
  • Video of the incident became viral on X

In a video that has now gone viral, a group of pro-Kannada activists can be seen engaging with shopkeepers in the Old Airport Road. They applied a spray to blacken sign boards which are in Bengali outside of eateries on the road.

An individual asked the activists their reason for doing so. The activists assured him of an answer. They explained to the manager of a roadside eatery that the signboards must be such that 70% of it is in Kannada and 30% of it is in English. This is reported to be the norms established by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

They instructed the manager to not use any third language. “You want all the facilities of the state but you do not want the state’s language? If a Kannadiga comes to eat in your restaurant, which language would he understand?” an activist is heard saying.

This video received mixed responses by netizens. “So-called pro-Kannada activists blackening signboards of small shops off Old airport rd. Claim that Kannada should be 70% & English 30% on boards. Simple to harass small biz than "implement" this on large biz houses (sic),” a user remarked on X. “Kannada activists have been doing it all over. Be it MG showroom or small business, doesn't matter.Acc to Rule-24a,Kannada should be 60% of the signage. If they fail to do so,activists shouldn't leave them. Karnataka Rakshana Vedhike has already warned to adhere to laws.(sic),” another user posted offering an alternative perspective.
