Pune: ACP shoots wife and nephew dead; commits suicide later

Bharat Gaikwad (57), Assistant Commissioner of Police at the Rajapeth Police Station in Amravati was on a vacation in Pune. They were lodged in a police bungalow in the Baner area of Pune. 

At around 3:30 AM on Monday morning his son and nephew rushed to Bharat Gaikwad’s room. To their shock, Bharat Gaikwad’s wife Moni Gaikwad (44) lay dead with a bullet wound lodged in her body. Upon seeing his son and nephew, Bharat Gaikwad fired another shot, this time directed at his nephew at his chest. His nephew, Deepak (35) too succumbed to the shot almost immediately. A while later, Bharat Gaikwad directed to the gun to his own head and committed suicide. Bharat Gaikwad has not left behind any suicide note. The police and Bharat Gaikwad’s immediate family members are clueless as to what had transpired to lead to this tragedy. The motive for the crime currently remains undetermined. Investigations are however underway in the Chaturshringi Police Station, located in Pune, Maharashtra.
