Somnath topped the Rs 49 competition during the game between England and Bangladesh

BJP general secretary Amol Thorat had registered a complaint after Jhende's interaction with the media

This serves as a reminder to other police personnel: DCP

Somnath Jhende, a sub-inspector in Pune has been suspended for indulging in online gambling without intimating higher officials.

Somnath had won Rs 1.5 crore on Dream 11 by gaining the top position in a Rs 49 competition during the game between England and Bangladesh. This news had spread quickly across the department. Jhende had also given an interview to the media with his uniform with regard to his turn in fortune. Jhende had also posted a photo of himself with an Audi car on social media.

Former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) general secretary Amol Thorat had registered a complaint after his interaction with the media. The reasons provided for the suspension was that the game worked as a distraction during the time of duty for Jhende and through his interview, he has promoted online gambling among impressionable youngsters. “After the investigation, it was found that he played the Dream11 game without permission, leading to his suspension. This serves as a reminder to other police personnel that they should refrain from playing online games in a similar manner, as they too could face disciplinary action.” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Swapna Gore stated.

“Many people play this game. It’s a sport, not a game played for hours. But still action is being taken against me,” Jhende stated after his suspension was enforced.
